Introduction of the Institution

Disable Welfare Trust of India was established under the Charitable Trust Act registered vide reg. No. e-3129 dated 19-11-1991. The registered office of the trust is situated at 1058, Dhobi Street, Nanpura, Surat-1. This trust has been granted exemption under sec. 80G of Income Tax. The trust got permission for starting a school for the handicapped children from Standard I to VII in 1996-97, since there was no school from Baroda to Mumbai (either Pvt. Or Govt.). The Surat Municipal corporation was requested to provide the space for the same. The Surat Municipal corporation was kind enough to allot 10 Rooms of their school no. 10-11 at Ambanagar, Bhatar Road, Surat. Initially 118 students got admitted to this school from Std. Ist to VIIth. In 1998-99 the school got permission from the Education Department Gandhinagar for Std. VIIIth. The strength in the second year 174. In 1999-2000, the school got permission for Std. IXth and the total Strength reached upto 226. Impressed by the performance and the activities of this school, the Surat Municipal Corporation was kind enough to hand over a separate school building having 18 rooms on a token rent of Re. 1 per Anum on a lease for 30 years on 23-3-2000. The trust added some facility like lift. In 2000-01, the school got permission for Std. Xth and the strength is 252 now. Almost all the children hail from various slum areas of the city. The school doesn't charge any fee or take donation from any student. The school provides 100% free facility that include required stationery, text book, school bags, lunch box, water bags, uniform (2 pairs) mid-day meals transportations, computer training, physiotherapy treatment, industrial training and tricycles, calipers, wheel chairs, crutches etc. to the needy children and free operation if necessary. Moreover scholarship of Rs. 500/- given to each student every year.

The Labour & Employment Department of the Govt. of Gujarat, Gandhinagar has granted permission to start I.T.I. for handicapped person in 1999-2000. In this I.T.I. 22 handicapped students are under training. Every year this school conducts cultural programmes, sports etc. to develop the personality of the handicapped children. Medical checkups is done every Thursday and free medicines are given to the needy.

The founder president of this institute Mr. Kanubhai Tailor, himself is a handicapped person having disability of his legs since birth. He is associated with many national and international organizations working for handicaps. He got the award for the best employee from the Labour & Employment Department of Gujarat at the worthy hands of his Excellency the Governor of Gujarat in 1989 & 91. he also got the award of best person from youth service and Culture Department of the Govt. of Gujarat in 1993. he earned the outstanding young person of the world (Among 92 Countries) Award from Junior Chamber International U.S.A, in 1992. He also bagged the President Award for his service to the handicapped at the worthy hands of His Excellency the President of India Mr. K. R. Nayanan in presence of Hon. Prime Minister, I. K. Gujral and the concerned hon. Minister Mr. Ramu Ahluwalia from the Social Justice & Employment Department of the Govt. of India on the eve of the Golden Jubilee Celebration of our Independence. Moreover he also bagged 24 other National & International awards. He is dreaming of making an ideal center in which at least 500 handicapped children can be educated and trained so as to bring them into the main stream of the society.
